It is very important to develop practical methods for the determination of heavy metals in environmental and biological samples. Mercury is one of the dangerous metals discharged into the environment. The determination of mercury is very important from an environmental point of view. In this research, for the first time, hollow polyethylene glycol nanoparticles coated with CdS quantum dots modified with cysteamine were utilized as probes for the determination of Hg(II) ions in aqueous samples. The Resonance Light Scattering (RLS) method was used to track the interaction between the synthesized nanoparticles and the investigated cation. The results showed that in the presence of Hg(II) ions, the synthetic nanoparticles stick together and increase the RLS signal. In optimum conditions, the determination of Hg(II) ion with the developed method was established in the concentration range of 0.1 - 3.0 mg L-1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.9919 and a detection limit of 4.2 μg L-1 with appropriate accuracy and precision.
