Today, due to the development of many industries and factories, the discharge of oily wastewater, organic pollutants and frequent oil spills, numerous pollutions have observed in the waters. Adsorption (filtration) is considered one of the most effective methods for removing oily pollutants. In this research, the ZIF-8 was first prepared, functionalized with octadecylamine (m-ZIF-8), and then incorporated into the polyurethane sponge using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). PDMS simultaneously acted as a ZIF-8 binder to polyurethane and also led to the hydrophobicity of the composite. The prepared materials were first investigated by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Then, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging, and EDS map analysis were performed. Finally, the absorption efficiency of different oils such as olive oil, sunflower oil, motor oil, and diesel was studied for the as-prepared adsorbents. The obtained results showed that the loading of ZIF-8 and m-ZIF-8 has led to an increase in the hydrophobicity of the polyurethane sponge and, as a result, an increase in the oil absorption efficiency from 42.02% to 50.07-67.95%.
