Ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) is an asymmetric aliphatic carbonate. This compound is a good organic solvent and chemical intermediate that has wide applications in paint coatings, organic synthesis, medicine, fuel additives, etc. This compound is widely used as a solvent to facilitate the condensation of ions in electrochemical graphite and also to ensure the performance of liquid electrolytes at high temperatures. In this study, different methods have been used to synthesize ethyl methyl carbonate. In the first method, using the reaction of dimethyl carbonate and ethanol in the presence of sodium ethoxide catalyst under different conditions, the desired product was not obtained. In the second method, using the reaction of urea/ethanol/methanol in the presence of aluminum/zinc oxide catalytic mixture, the desired product was not formed. In the third method, using the reaction of ethylene carbonate, ethanol, methanol and zeolite catalyst, ethyl methyl carbonate was synthesized with a purity of 50.8%. Finally, in the last route, using methyl chloroformate, ethanol and 1-methylimidazole as catalysts, ethyl methyl carbonate was synthesized with a relative purity of 88.3% and a yield of 52%. The structures of all synthesized compounds were identified by FT-IR, GC-Mass, and 1H NMR spectroscopy.
